The Walter Hive is a non-profit organization located in Scottsdale, AZ that exists to encourage people to make art in order to build community and impower the discouraged. I've been lucky enough to volunteer with them in a number of different capacities, my favorite of this being for the sewing workshop I designed and delivered for about 20 people of all ages.
I sew a lot of my own clothes and will often be stopped by people that ask how I learned to sew, often followed by "I would love to learn to sew but it just seems so difficult!". I knew I had to pick a project that would be 1) accessible to beginners as well as 2) made with accessible materials. I landed on these small cat plushies made out of a pair of socks which allow for the practice of basic sewing skills and also allows the creator to have fun decorating as well!
Overall, the workshop went swimmingly. I would take the group through step by step then come around to make answer any additional questions about the steps and help out where necessary with techniques. The results were a unique little friend for every participant to take home that was customized to their liking. Not only did they make something with their own two hands, they also learned valuable sewing skills like back stitching and button sewing that they can hopefully use later in life
